Fraud and Scammers
While many positive stories are emerging from relief efforts, unfortunately, there are also those trying to take advantage of the situation. FEMA has issued an advisory warning about potential scams. Be cautious of GoFundMe campaigns and other donation platforms—if you don’t personally know the organizer, take the time to research before contributing. Protect yourself by donating only to verified sources and trusted organizations.

Volunteer Locally

Your time is just as valuable as any donation. If you live in or near the affected areas, consider volunteering to help with cleanup, repairs, or distributing essential supplies like water, food, and blankets. It’s important to coordinate with local relief organizations, such as churches or community centers, to ensure your efforts are both safe and needed. Many areas may still be unsafe, so following guidance from local authorities is crucial to protect yourself and others.

To be added to the list, please email admin@saluda.com with your name, email, phone number, your location, and details about your skills, availability, and the areas you are willing to travel to. This will help us match you with the appropriate efforts as they arise.

Shop and Support Locally

When businesses in the area start to reopen, supporting them financially will be a huge help. Consider buying from local stores either in person or online. Gift cards are another great way to show support, as they provide much-needed cash flow for businesses that are struggling to get back on their feet. It’s also worth seeking out businesses that are contributing part of their profits to local recovery efforts.

Spread the Word

Raising awareness can amplify relief efforts. Share updates, fundraisers, and community needs through your social media channels. You never know who in your network might be able to contribute. Use hashtags and mention local organizations to extend the reach of your posts. The more people who know about the recovery efforts, the better.

Offer Housing or Resources

If you have a spare room, temporary housing, or even supplies such as food, water, or warm clothing, consider offering them to those in need. Contact local shelters or disaster relief organizations to see how best to distribute these resources. Even a small contribution, like providing blankets or portable chargers, can bring comfort to someone in need.

Check Before Traveling to Help

It’s natural to want to help in person, but before heading to the impacted areas, ensure that your presence will be helpful, not a burden. In some cases, extra volunteers can strain limited resources or disrupt organized efforts. Check with local government officials, relief organizations, or community leaders before planning any trips to help. This will ensure your assistance is both safe and effective. If you do decided to head this way please do not come requiring resources. Gas up and come with food will keep the strain off our already limited resources.
