We invite you to step inside the Saluda Historic Depot and explore one of the defining stories of our mountain town. Set along the historic rail line that shaped this community, the depot stands as a preserved reminder of the railroad era that helped build Saluda.
The Saluda Grade crests at the top of this small mountain village and is known as the steepest, mainline, standard gauge railroad in the country. For generations, trains climbed this remarkable stretch of track, leaving behind stories of engineering, resilience, and daily life along the rails.

Inside the museum, exhibits share the story of the Saluda Grade, the railroad’s impact on the region, and the people who lived and worked here. Historic photographs, artifacts, and firsthand accounts offer a tangible connection to Saluda’s railroad beginnings.
Museum Hours
The museum is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., April through December, as well as select holidays. Admission is always free, and visitors are welcome to explore at their own pace.
Saluda Train Tales
On the third Friday of each month at 7 p.m., the depot hosts Saluda Train Tales, an evening of storytelling centered on the Saluda Grade, the railroad, and the broader history of Saluda. This event is free and open to the public, offering a chance to hear local voices share stories that might otherwise be forgotten.

Admission is free, and voluntary donations are appreciated. The Saluda Historic Depot is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax deductible.
